2012 Lotus Evora R2R by Galpin Auto Sports

We reckon Galpin Auto Sports needed a break from all those customized Ford vehicles they’re bringing to the 2011 SEMA Auto Show so they turned their attention towards a few sports cars from across the pond. One of these vehicles is a 2012 Lotus Evora, which GAS took the challenge of reinventing from a road-going sports car into a fully-dressed track-spec race car.

The result is the Evora R2R, a car that features plenty of aerodynamic upgrades, including a new front splitter, a new rear wing, new side skirts made from aluminum, black racing decals, racing seats dressed in fine Alcantara, and a new set of 19" (front) and 20" (rear) flat-back racing wheels.

To uphold its new race car identity, Galpin Auto Sports also added a new Flowmaster exhaust system, clearing way for the sports car’s 3.5-liter V6 engine to receive an increased output of 300 horsepower, up from the 280-horsepower output of the standard road-going roadster.

All told, Galpin Auto Sports accomplished what it always seems to do best. Impressive modifications all around are nothing new to these guys and they proved that yet again with the Lotus Evora R2R.

nfiniti Hybrid Sports Car Concept Teased

 Just the Facts:
  • Infiniti's new sports-car concept will preview the brand's future design language.
  • The concept also will showcase Infiniti's first application of a range-extending hybrid powertrain.
  • Infiniti says its intent is to "extend the potential for high-performance, low-emissions electric cars."

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Infiniti, Nissan's upscale brand, has released two teaser images of a new hybrid sports-car concept that it will unveil next March at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show. Infiniti says its intent is to "extend the potential for high-performance, low-emissions electric cars."

Infiniti's new sports-car concept will preview the brand's future design language, beyond the Essence and the Etherea. The concept also will showcase Infiniti's first application of a range-extending hybrid powertrain, "to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect," according to the company.

Infiniti already sells a standard hybrid model, the M35h, and is readying a pure electric car based on the Nissan Leaf for the 2012 New York Auto Show.

The range-extended Infiniti hybrid sports-car concept showcases a third "green" application, one that, similar to the Chevrolet Volt, uses the gasoline engine primarily to extend the range of the electric motor and battery pack.

Inside Line says: Look for Nissan and alliance partner Renault to begin showing new range-extended hybrid models of their own.

Honda NSX sportcar in North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2012

Honda / Acura models reportedly will display a new generation NSX sports car that will be displayed at the Detroit Motor Show mat known as the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2012 in the format of the concept car. Surely this figure NSX will come with high-tech devices. One technology that is applied is likely to be advanced hybrid power plant that is able to provide great power yet fuel-efficient. In addition to the NSX, Honda will also introduce another concept in the form of new compact luxury sedan is scheduled to launch in spring 2012 with the name of ILX. It is a compact sport sedan that will make the Japanese car manufacturer is entering a new segment. 2013 Nissan 370Z

At the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, Nissan has announced a mid-cycle refresh for the 370Z (internally designated the Z34) for 2013 model year. With a revised front fascia, vertical LED daytime running lights and red reflector replacing the black center cover on the rear bumper, most of the changes to the coupe and roadster versions of the 370Z are aesthetic. Detractors of the “fangs” on the lower part of the front bumper will be glad to know that they are now gone in favor for a front air inlet that’s been smoothed into a rectangle. Magma Red and Midnight Blue are two new exterior color choices and the fuel gauge trim in the cabin receives a darker finish.

The 370Z Coupe, the hardtop version, will receive new 18-in. wheels. Sport package equipped Zs will see additional upgrades, including Euro-tuned shocks, red brake calipers and an updated 19-in. aluminum wheel design. The factory-tuned Nismo 370Z forgoes any revisions to the fascias or shocks, but inherits new high-rigidity brake hoses similar to the ones on the GT-R, and are now filled with performance brake fluid. The Nismo Z34 also gains an improved Bose audio system with two additional speakers and two subwoofers, and dark gray 19-in. wheels. The new Midnight Blue exterior hue will not be available for the Nismo version of the 370Z.

Powertrain specs remain the same for the 2013 370Z family. The standard 370Z and 370Z Touring will retain the 332-bhp 3.7-liter V-6 with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. For fans of clutches and open sky, a manual option for the convertible 370Z Roadster will be available in Touring trim only.

The Nismo 370Z returns with the same 350-bhp 3.7-liter V-6 engine. The 6-speed manual with SynchroRev Match, Nissan’s rev-matching system, is its only transmission, and the Nismo Z34 comes with a viscous limited-slip differential. Both SynchroRev technology and the improved diff are available on non-Nismo variants via the optional Sport package. The Nismo Z and Sport package equipped Zs also include performance-oriented 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers and bigger brake discs. Exclusive to the Nismo Z, however, are Nismo-tuned springs and dampers, a 3-point front strut tower brace and aero kit, track-friendly items that are unchanged from the previous year. The upgraded 2013 Nissan 370Z will reach dealer showrooms sometime in June.

Acura NSX Concept - 2012

A legend returns, American-made.

The on-again, off-again project to resurrect the Acura NSX is evidently on again as the Japanese automaker unveiled this dramatically styled concept at the North American International Auto Show. Acura says the car will bow in production form sometime in the next three years and will be built in Ohio and engineered by a team led by Honda R&D of America. Remaining true to the roots of this legendary 2-seater, the aluminum-intensive Acura NSX Concept features mid-engine placement and a sleek shape that is every bit as contemporary as the original’s when it debuted in 1990.

This newest iteration features a grille treatment with a trapezoidal shape and large single bar dividing the space, similar to that used on current production models. The opening is flanked by additional inlets that also serve as chin spoilers. The sides feature stepped rocker panels and the engine air is routed through intakes positioned just aft of the doors. In addition to the thin row of typical concept car lighting, the NSX concept also features a glass roof. Both items may not make the transition to production.

The Acura NSX Concept is tidy, riding on a 101.4-in. wheelbase and measures 170.5 in. overall. It stands just 45.7 in. high and is 74.6 in. wide. The concept has 19x9-in. front and 20x10-in. rear wheels shod respectively with 255/35R19 and 275/30R20 tires.
Like the original NSX, the new model will be powered by a mid-mounted V-6 engine. While company officials provided few details on its displacement, its widely believed that the direct injected powerplant will be about 3.5 liters in size and produce at least 310 bhp.

But most important, the Acura NSX will showcase the division’s latest iteration of Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which unlike the previous mechanical application will employ hybrid power to give the car exceptional handling. The engine will drive the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. An auxiliary lithium-ion battery pack will power two front-mounted electric motors combined inboard in a single housing, that provide an additional 100 hp, for a combined total output of 410 hp. Each motor turns a front wheel and can speed up or use regenerative braking to induce yaw for crisper turn-in as well as correcting for either over- or understeer.

This is similar to the next generation SH-AWD which will be used on Acura sedans, however, flipped to where the engine drives the front wheels and the electric motors handle the rear axle.

“This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make the NSX the ultimate expression of Acura’s idea to create synergy between man and machine,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. The hybrid offers two benefits, according to Ito—performance on par with sports cars that have larger engines and all-wheel drive, but with the added benefit of better fuel economy. “Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency,” he maintained. “In this new era, even as we focus on the fun-to-drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.”

Eco-friendliness needn’t be dull, as the car is rumored to hit 60 mph in 3.0 sec. The production version’s price should hover around $100,000.
